About The House

The exceptional features include the two-story portico, corner pilasters and dentil work under the eaves.

Located on the south side of Washington Street and two blocks from the Court House square, it has had very few alterations over the years.

Its architectural integrity has been maintained and it closely resembles its original state.

Sadly, the house was badly in need of repair and their restoration efforts have been extensive and ongoing.

The Barnhills have single-handled restored the home. Their first task of many was to preserve the integrity of the structure and they replaced the roof and an extensive amount of exterior wood rot.

Interestingly, all the exterior wood needed to be milled to match the original size of the wood used in the structure.

Next came painting the exterior to match what is believed to be the original color scheme. Once the outer structure was secure, the real work began on the interior space to make it livable.

All the electrical and plumbing were replaced. Central heat and air was added and the kitchen was updated.  Each room was meticulously repaired, painted, and decorated.

The Dilworth Barnhill House is now used by the Barnhill family for weekend getaways and Thanksgiving dinners.

Both of the Barnhill’s married children’s weddings were held on the spacious grounds. It has also been used by the public for any number of special events including bridal and baby showers, rehearsal dinners and civic meetings.

It is also frequently filled with visitors, as it is located in the heart of Monticello and is only a short drive outside of Tallahassee, where it can often be difficult to find an accomodation during busy times of the year, like graduation and football season.
